Since a bylaw amendment limiting residents between the hours of 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. to enjoy a back yard fire in Saskatoon, the number of tickets issued have risen substantially.
The bylaw came into effect in May after much debate at city hall. Enforcement and ticketing began in June.
Since then 16 residents have been ticketed while eight others are in the investigation queue according to the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD).
It’s a stark comparison to the two years previous when only one ticketed was issued for violating the fire bylaw in each year respectively.
While the number of people ticketed has risen, the number of complaints has actually dropped according to SFD.
In the first six months of 2017, 126 complaints were received. Meanwhile the first six months of 2018 have generated 112 complaints.
