The segregated bike lanes on King Street in Uptown Waterloo are ready for public use.
The region says “no parking” signs have been installed along the route and warns motorists that the city will be enforcing the bylaw along the route.
The lanes are denoted by cycling symbols.
The project is not 100 per cent complete as intersections cannot be marked until paving is completed in August. Green paint will be added to help create more awareness for drivers.
The crossing at the intersections will be based on a design which will be used for the first time in the province of Ontario.
The region cites the crossing at the intersection of King and Erb streets when it points to the added safety for pedestrians with the protected intersection design.
According to the region, it will allow for a continued separation for cyclists, shorter crossing distances for both cyclists and pedestrians, and more time for pedestrians to react and stop.
