Train derailment in New Westminster snarls traffic during rush hour

A train derailment in New Westminster on Wednesday morning caused a big headache for drivers.

About eight cars of a CN train derailed, forcing the closure of Front Street between East Columbia and Begbie Street.

The road reopened around 9:15 a.m.

The cars did not contain hazardous material and were empty.

No one was injured.

A spokesperson for CN Rail says the derailment happened just after midnight Wednesday.

There was no threat to the public and the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Rail traffic was also affected however. Amtrak service between Vancouver and Seattle was delayed for a number of hours but it running again.
