The City of Hamilton is shutting down its Central Composting Facility in response to odour issues, which have been escalating over the last two weeks.
Compost material will be shipped offsite starting immediately and as of Monday, no new organic material is being accepted at the facility.
Officials say that the odour issues may linger, but that shipping the material offsite should eventually address the problem.
The city says waste management staff are investigating the root cause of the issue and will not resume operations until they have been successfully addressed.
The decision by the city was made after Ward 4 Coun. Sam Merulla said he and Ward 3 Coun. Matthew Green demanded the facility on Burlington Street close due to the “incompetence associated with the operation of the facility and the odour crisis paralyzing the lower city.”
They are also seeking “punitive actions” for those responsible.
