Football fans will be able to take advantage of free transit earlier in the day Friday, as the city has extended the operating hours for the Ticket to Ride and park and ride programs.

Normally, the service operates for two hours before and after every Edmonton Eskimos game. But the city expects to see increased demand for transit for the home opener against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The city said a larger-than-normal crowd is expected because of the football team’s decision to start the 50/50 jackpot at $70,000, as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations.

Because of that, people with a game day ticket can board any Edmonton Transit Service bus or the LRT starting at 4 p.m. — which is four hours before the 8 p.m. kickoff. Tickets will remain valid during the game and for two hours after the game.

Park & ride service will also start at 5:30 p.m. from the six lots located around the city:

  • Burns City Lot (70 Street and 121 Avenue)
  • Calder City Lot (124 Street and 124 Avenue)
  • Davies City Lot (86 Street and 61 Avenue)
  • Kingsway Mall (Princess Elizabeth Avenue and 109 Street)
  • Lewis Farms (1021 Webber Greens Drive)
  • Mill Woods Town Centre (66 Street and 23 Avenue)

Regular ETS fares apply for people buying tickets once they arrive at Commonwealth Stadium. Parking restrictions will be in effect around the stadium, so football fans are encouraged to use transit.
