One dead in fatal crash on Crowchild Trail Monday

One person was killed and another person was taken to the hospital after a dramatic crash on Crowchild Trail Monday – Jun 11, 2018

One person is dead and another person is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash on Crowchild Trail near 24 Avenue N.W. in Calgary on Monday.

Around 12 a.m., police said a truck with two people inside lost control while driving southbound on Crowchild, struck the concrete median barrier, crossed four lanes of traffic and slammed into a tree. The vehicle then caught fire.

Excessive speed and alcohol are considered to be factors in the crash.

Both people in the truck were extricated by first responders. The passenger was declared dead, and the driver was transported to the hospital in critical condition.​

The tree that was hit by the truck will be removed by city crews.

Crowchild, near Charleswood Drive N.W., was closed for a period of time as police investigated the scene.

Crowchild Trail reopened to traffic around 5:30 a.m.
