A heavy police presence was seen in the central Edmonton neighbourhood of Strathearn late Monday afternoon.

Seven police cruisers, an ambulance and an Alberta Health Services SUV could be seen in the area of 87 Street and 96 Avenue.

Police were initially called at 3:40 p.m. for a weapons complaint. The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) did not confirm what had occurred at the scene but said the homicide unit had been called in to investigate.

Witnesses told Global News they heard a woman’s screams coming from one of the units. They said a small group of residents ran to try and help when they saw a man standing over a woman in a doorway, stabbing her repeatedly.
