History
Fishing and hunting were life-sustaining activities maintained by the Shuswap and Okanagan peoples before settlement began in the Lumby area.
The land that would one day house the village is believed to have first been sighted by a trapper named Donald McIntyre.
The story goes that he cleared a path through forest underbrush and found a meadow that he called the “mountain of peace.”
Gold would be discovered in Cherry Creek, now known as Monashee Creek, and starting in 1863, prospectors made their way to the area in search of riches.
The biggest nugget discovered near Lumby weighed 241 grams.
Many early residents were Chinese miners.
Lumby would become an attractive destination for countercultural artists in the 1960s, and the village’s murals are a testament to that.
