Dozens of Kingston residents could be out of their homes for up to a month due to the damage done by Wednesday’s high winds.
An apartment building at 385 Division St. had to be evacuated after a good portion of the roof was torn off.
Todd Corkey, the property manager, says a couple of inspectors including one from the city have determined there was no structural damage to the three-storey building.
“The only issue we have is if the city decides that the waterproofing isn’t good enough to have tenants come back, then we have to wait until the roof’s completed which could take up until a month.”
Corkey says around 60 people were affected, while Kingston Fire and Rescue say it’s closer to 80 people. Whatever the number, no one was hurt. Those without a place to stay were taken to a hotel.
“We took steps to remove all the occupants from the building and do some assessments,” said Kingston Fire & Rescue Chief Shawn Armstrong.
“And as a result of those assessments, we took the occupants to transit buses and got some initial information from the occupants as to what their immediate needs would be and we tried to look after those needs.”
A cleanup crew was on site on Thursday, removing sections of the damaged roof as well as other debris.
Numerous agencies helped out including the Red Cross.
