A St. Albert man has been charged after allegedly ramming his car into a police cruiser during a traffic stop in Leduc, Alta.
RCMP said officers noticed the driver was travelling at an excessive rate of speed while conducting a laser speed enforcement operation Tuesday on Highway 2.
Mounties pulled the driver over and as an officer was about to exit his vehicle, the driver reversed into the cruiser, RCMP said.
The police car received only minor damage and the officer was not injured.
“We are thankful no one was injured,” Const. Bridget Morla said. “It is a reminder of the dangers police officers face on a daily basis across the country when conducting traffic stops.”
The truck and driver were found a short distance from the scene with the help of the Edmonton Police Service’s Air 1 helicopter.
Karl Duhamel, 35, is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance. Police expect additional charges will be laid.
