The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) received numerous calls at about 3 p.m. reporting that smoke and flames could be seen coming from the four-storey building, spokesperson Carol Henke said.

“When fire crews arrived, they were met with heavy fire and smoke from the third- and fourth-floor balconies,” CFD said in a release. “A second alarm was called for additional resources.”

The building was evacuated and no injuries were reported. A handful of residents with mobility issues had to wait for emergency crews to arrive to help them out.

About 30 people and several pets were evacuated from the building. Residents waited in a nearby transit bus until they were given the go-ahead to go back inside their homes.

While only two units were damaged by fire, CFD said there was significant smoke damage throughout other parts of the condo building.

Investigators said careless discarding of smoking material or a BBQ left on may have been the cause.

Each area of the building is being assessed by firefighters for residual carbon monoxide levels and to determine what utilities were affected.

“The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind citizens that smoking materials should always be placed in sturdy, non-combustible containers which are wind resistant and never in planter pots, flower beds, mulch or any vegetation,” CFD said.
