March 27: It was a close call for drivers in Delta after a car was seen driving down the wrong side of Highway 99 before colliding head on with a Toyota Rav 4. RCMP are looking for witnesses who may have seen the Volkswagen driving the wrong way on March 25 – Mar 27, 2018

A 26-year-old man involved in a head-on crash after he drove the wrong way through the George Massey Tunnel has died, the BC Coroners Service said Thursday.

The crash happened Sunday, when dashcam video captured a Volkswagen Golf travelling southbound in a northbound lane before a rear camera caught it continuing down the highway.

The Volkswagen later crashed head-on with a Toyota Rav4 that was travelling northbound; a grey Honda Pilot was also involved.

The collision happened south of the Highway 17 overpass; the Volkswagen driver was left with life-threatening injuries.

Investigating the incident, police said the driver was impaired, but not by alcohol.

Prior to the crash, the Volkswagen had been driven in the wrong direction through the George Massey Tunnel; it remains unclear how the driver ended up doing that.

The BC Coroners Service is in the early stages of an investigation.
