Watch Above: If it wasn’t caught so quickly, a fire in an alley off of Vernon’s busy main street could have been much worse. As it stands, the blaze has temporarily closed three businesses – Mar 29, 2018

Several businesses had to be evacuated after a fire in downtown Vernon Wednesday.

Deputy fire chief Scott Hemstad said crews were called to the 2900 block of 30th Avenue and found some boxes and other items on fire in an alley, at the rear of a building.

“We made a quick hit with water and knocked it down. We made an entry to some of the rear areas of the structure and extinguished all the flames before it spread to the main structure,” Hemstad said.

Hemstad said staff at five businesses were evacuated as a precaution, with no injuries.

Atleast three businesses were closed on Thursday due to the fire.

The Yoga Studio at Lotus and Lettuce Vernon said on Facebook that the fire broke out behind its bathroom wall outside before creeping in and that property was damaged.
