A push by a number of municipalities to halt expanding coal exports was celebrated in White Rock today.
Dozens demonstrated and enjoyed cake on the waterfront Sunday afternoon as a way to applaud recent votes by Surrey, White Rock and Vancouver councils for expressing concern about growing coal exports, which is being blamed for climate change.

“We’re only going to change this if we all stand up and say ‘no you can’t do it.’ And the fact that local governments are willing to say ‘wait a minute, you haven’t consulted us? We need a say in this?’ That’s really important,” said one concerned resident. “I think that kind of local leadership is going to make the difference, and I’m going to be proud of these local governments for doing that.”
“The port authority has said that oceans are meaningless, and I just find that arrogant and kind of condescending.”
