Meet BC1 anchor: Scott McLean

Scott is originally from St. Thomas, Ontario – home of Joe Thornton, Rachel McAdams, the Crown Victoria and the late Jumbo the circus elephant.

He has a degree from York University in Toronto, but also spent some time at Carleton University in Ottawa.

At York, Scott was the News Editor of the “Excalibur.” He also did work placements at /A News in London, ON and then at CHBC News in Kelowna before landing in Regina.

Scott worked at Global Regina since 2010.

Most recently, he was on the Morning News as the morning live reporter and fill-in anchor. Scott says even though work started at 4 a.m., there was no better experience he could have gotten in live TV.

He got to cover everything from provincial politics to breaking news to entertainment, and whatever else had people in SK talking.

Scott also did a few random jobs at the station in Regina.

For a few months, he was the weekend technical producer even though he is not very technologically-inclined, or so he thought.

Shooting, editing, routing live feeds and changing studio light bulbs are all talents he acquired, although he is not sure he will be putting them to use anytime soon.

In 2011, Scott shared an RTDNA honourable mention for a half-hour special he produced called “Becoming Snowbird 6.” It followed a rookie Snowbird pilot through training in Moose Jaw, SK in preparation for the 2011 show season.

The other project Scott is proud of was an investigation that ran on “Focus Saskatchewan.” It looked at just how severe the problem of over-crowding had gotten in provincial jails, and why the province couldn’t explain exactly where over 150 inmates were housed within the corrections system.

Last fall, he travelled to Minneapolis, MN to cover the US election from a Western Canadian perspective. Scott ended up doing live hits for every Global Morning Show across Canada. He covered a Paul Ryan rally in an airplane hangar, a Bill Clinton speech and even managed to get in a question for Mitt Romney’s son Josh.

Here is a Q&A with Scott:

1. What is your role at BC1?

On BC1, I am one of the weekend anchors. I’ll be anchoring from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and then from 1-4 p.m. I’ll also be anchoring on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. When I’m not on the desk, I’ll be reporting, producing, writing or doing whatever else they need me to do! I enjoy the changes in pace that come along with filling in for a range of different roles.

2. How does it feel to be building a TV channel from the ground up?

It’s a pretty rare privilege to be able to be part of a start-up, and I’ve been lucky enough to do this twice, having also been part of the team that launched the Regina Morning News. I know the process is tough – there are always plenty of kinks to be worked out and workflows to establish, but at the end of the day, you get to bring new ideas to the table and play a small role in shaping what the channel will ultimately look like for years to come. How can you not be excited about that?

3. What started you in broadcasting?

I’ve been a news fan for my entire life – ever since I was a kid and sat reading about the Toronto Blue Jays in the sports section of the London Free Press. From there the news bug just never left my system. I’ve always loved the immediacy that comes with 24-hour news channels. I can watch CNN until the cows come home!
I read a lot in the newspaper, magazines and online to get my news fix, but there’s something about live TV that those other mediums just can’t replicate – that’s the x-factor that lured me into broadcasting.

4. Who is your role model…on TV or in life?

I’ve always believed that if you’re not getting better, then you’re probably getting worse. I don’t have just one role model in TV, but I have had plenty of great journalists help me to keep getting better.
For the past couple years Global Toronto anchor Antony Robart has been (and still is) a great resource and mentor for my reporting and anchoring.
I’ve also learned lots from my colleagues at Global Regina – people like reporter Tom Vernon, an incredible all-around journalist, or Heather Anderson, the Morning News anchor, who is also a top-notch producer.
Now that I’m at Global BC there is no shortage of role models in the newsroom. I’m still getting used to being around all of the talent and experience in the building.

5. What is your favourite thing to do when you are not at the anchor desk?

Apart from delivering the news, I also like watching the news, reading, the Toronto Blue Jays and “The Office.” I like to get outside too, so I can’t complain about the BC climate. In fact just a few weeks ago I played golf and went snowboarding on the same day!
I also love to travel, in fact I think I was getting a bit of a reputation at my previous job for the number of vacation days I managed to squirrel away – but I put them to good use. I’ve travelled across a good chunk of Canada and the US, plus parts of Central America, the Caribbean and Europe. I can’t wait to start seeing more of this beautiful province.
