Dashcam catches wrong-way driver in Calgary

Dash-cam video posted to Facebook shows a wrong-way driver on Stoney Trail around 5 a.m. Saturday – Mar 12, 2018

Calgary police confirmed a man has been charged with impaired driving in connection with an incident caught on dashcam video on Stoney Trail Saturday morning.

In a statement Monday afternoon, a Calgary Police Service (CPS) spokesperson said police received numerous reports of a minivan driving the wrong way in the southbound lanes of Stoney Trail near Glenmore Trail and 114 Avenue S.E. at around 5 a.m. on Saturday.

CPS said the minivan hit a vehicle, then continued driving for a short distance, hit a second vehicle and then came to a stop.

A portion of the incident was caught on a dashboard camera and posted to Facebook by Rafael Martinez.

The dramatic early-morning video appears to show a vehicle approaching at a high speed. The vehicle clips a car, then a loud crash is heard. The clipped vehicle then spins out of control before safely coming to a stop. One of the occupants is then heard yelling, “Call 911!”

According to police, no one was injured in either crash.

Patrick Gamblin, 35, of Calgary was charged with impared operation of a vehicle and failure or refusal to provide a breath sample. He will appear in court April 25, 2018.
