Footprints in the snow lead officers to truck thief: RCMP

Meteghan RCMP have charged two people after threats were made towards staff at Saint Mary's Bay Academy in St. Bernard, N.S. File / Global News

The individual who stole a truck from a home in Canmore led police right to him, RCMP said.

RCMP said the thief left footprints in the snow that led from the driver’s side door of the stolen truck to the suspect’s home in Cochrane.

Police said it’s rare to catch a break like this while investigating stolen vehicles.

“I definitely think that was unusual,” said Const. Kary Moore. “But great at the same time in that we had the significant snowfall – and very recent snowfall – so they were able to, I guess, backtrack over some fresh tracks in the snow.”

RCMP said the Cochrane Crime Reduction Team noticed the stolen truck, which had been taken the day before from a home in Canmore, during checks on identified property offenders in the early morning hours of March 2. They followed the tracks to the suspect’s home.

Moore said the officers had been in the area to check on the suspect, adding that he had a history of vehicle theft.

RCMP also recovered a second vehicle, which had been stolen earlier in the month from Airdrie, Alta.

Police said in both cases keys were left in the ignition and that one of the vehicles had been left idling at the time it was stolen.

They are reminding people not to leave vehicles running while unattended.

Greg Deviat is charged with one count each of possession of property obtained by crime, failing to comply with a court order and driving while disqualified.

His next court appearance is March 13.
