While Jill Krop will be hosting BC1’s morning talk show, AM/BC, who are the people behind the scenes?
Aidan Buckley and Karen Jouhal are producing the show, so we thought we’d ask them a few questions about themselves and what to expect.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background in media.
My name is Aidan Buckley, I am originally from Dublin, Ireland and have always had a huge interest in TV & Film. As a youngster, the road I grew up on was often used for movies and music videos. We had everyone from Liam Neeson to The Spice Girls film on the road throughout the 90’s so I was often speaking with TV & Film crews and this really sparked my interest in the media.
After receiving an honors degree in Journalism & Editorial Design from the University of Wolverhampton in England I began my television production career as chief tea maker on one of Ireland’s top daytime shows, “The Afternoon Show.” Three years later I was producing the show itself and became the youngest live television producer in Ireland at the age of 24.
Since then I have been actively involved in over 1,000 hours of live television for the Irish national broadcaster RTE. I made the trip to Vancouver in 2010 and was working in digital media prior to working at Global.
2. What can viewers expect from AM/BC?
Viewers can expect an entertaining mix of topical issues and a new perspective on the day’s news stories. We’ll also be having some fun and really want to tap into stories from across B.C.
3. What makes a good talk show guest or topic?
Get daily National news
Tough question! I’m a firm believer that everyone has a story to tell so anyone who is willing to let us in on their story is a great guest.
4. If you could have anyone as a guest on the show, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?
The Boss, Bruce Springsteen. Purely for the opportunity to meet the man. He has had such an interesting life that we could easily dedicate a show to him. So Bruce, if you’re reading …
5. Who is the target audience for the show?
We’d like to attract an audience from across B.C. Specifically those who are at home through the mornings so everyone from university students to moms and dads at home.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background in media.
Born and raised in New Westminster, I’ve been lucky enough to call B.C. home for most of my life. I graduated from SFU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and psychology in 2008, and then came the big question every new grad faces: now what? I first fell in love with journalism when I was 7-years-old and picked up my first newspaper, so I made up my mind that the next step in my life would be furthering my education so I could become a journalist! I decided to take a year off to work and travel around Europe before moving to Halifax where I earned my post-baccalaureate degree in journalism at the University of King’s College. I ended up skipping my convocation ceremony because I was fortunate enough to be named one of the top graduating journalists in Canada when I won the 2010 CBC Joan Donaldson Scholarship. The scholarship came with a job as an associate producer for CBC News Now, so off to Toronto I went! But it wasn’t long before I moved back to the west coast to work on the assignment desk at CTV B.C. where I wore many hats, mainly that of a researcher. And because I’ve been taught when opportunity knocks make sure you open the door, I then made the move to CKNW radio to work as a talk show producer and programming assistant. Now I’m at BC1 – a place I can finally call home – and I’m absolutely thrilled about producing AM/BC!
2. What can viewers expect from AM/BC?
We have this great opportunity where we have a full hour to focus on the issues that matter to the people across the province. When you watch a story in a newscast you get a snippet of an interview with a “guest.” We plan on taking that guest and expanding that interview so that it becomes a discussion with Jill. We also want to have a bit of fun and we’ll be incorporating social media into the show so that viewers can connect with us and share their thoughts!
3. What makes a good talk show guest or topic?
I think a good talk show guest is anyone who can evoke emotion from the viewer – laughter, tears or anger. Everyone has a story to share, but what makes a GREAT story is whether or not it’s memorable.
4. If you could have anyone as a guest on the show, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?
If I could have anyone on the talk show, alive or dead, I would say the late Princess Diana, who did so much to open the public’s eyes into what life was REALLY like inside the Royal Family. I’d also love to chat with Albert Einstein, one of the greatest thinkers of all time. He turned physics from a science into an art and he has some of the best quotes from a philosophical standpoint that I’ve ever read!
5. Who is the target audience for the show?
Our target audience for AM/BC is people across the province who can tune in from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. So everyone from stay-at-home moms and dads to younger viewers, such as university students. And if you can’t tune in while the show is on the air, please follow us on Twitter: @BC1
