If you have concerns, don’t post about them online — instead just call police.

That’s the message to parents after an alleged threat was made on Monday to a Langley school, which saw rumours circulate around the wrong person.

District spokesperson Ken Hoff say the district heard about alleged threats made on social media about Langley Fine Arts School after a resident called it in.

Hoff says the online post had the caption “planning a school shooting.”

He says rumours quickly circulated online, and the finger was pointed at the wrong person.

“A lot of things were posted, there was a lot of conjecture and a lot of guess work and it turns out that it was another person entirely, [who] has since admitted to actually making the post so police had acted accordingly,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate when someone has been sort of called out… for something that they didn’t do, and it’s unfortunate online that these rumours and stories can spread very quickly and may not be entirely factual.”

The district writes in the letter to parents and guardians “Please continue to notify authorities of direct threats and refrain from spreading unsubstantiated rumours on social media.”

Hoff says the RCMP determined that the Langley Fine Arts school was not being targeted, and neither was the community.
