A dog that bit a child and his mother on Tuesday evening will be put down, according to City of Calgary animal services.

First responders were called to the 400 block of Radcliffe Crescent in the city’s southeast just before 6 p.m. for reports a two-year-old American Bulldog bit a child and an adult.

The five-year-old child suffered puncture wounds to his arm and his mother suffered puncture wounds to her hand and leg.

The dog, which recently had puppies, escaped her yard through a broken fence.

The owner immediately surrendered the dog to animal services.

“The best thing an owner can do is constantly review what their fence looks like, how they walk the dog, how they take care of the dog,” Doug Anderson with the city’s bylaw services said. “They need to be watching for signs.”

“We’ve learned over the years that dogs, if you don’t break an aggression cycle, it tends to get worse and there’s usually signs before these things happen.

“That can be anything from growling, snapping, chasing people — anything along those lines. So people need to watch for those signs and act accordingly.”

Experts say dogs can be more aggressive when puppies are involved. The puppies hadn’t been weaned, so animal services is working with vets to ensure they’re receiving care.
