The Alberta government is expanding its energy rebate program to help the restaurant and hospitality sectors become more energy efficient.
Environment Minister Shannon Phillips announced Thursday the province is increasing the maximum rebate in the Business, Non-Profit and Institutional Energy Savings Program from $60,000 to $100,000 for those who install energy-efficient projects.
It’s also adding 23 new eligible products used specifically by the hospitality industry, including energy-efficient commercial ovens and dishwashers.
Rebates for lighting, water-heating and HVAC products have also been expanded to better reflect the price of products in the Alberta market, and the government is simplifying the application process.
Phillips said in the first eight months of the program, there were more than 1,200 participants; including businesses, schools and hospitals.
“They received a total of $3.5 million in rebates for an average of $2,600 per project.”
“These projects represent more than $11 million that’s been invested in upgrading facilities across the province and that investment will save 40,000 gigajoules of energy each year,” Phillips said.
