Firefighters and EMS were called to a home on 109 Street near 58 Avenue shortly before 7:30 a.m., arriving a few minutes later to find the 1940s-era bungalow engulfed in fire.

Edmonton Fire Rescue said there were flames in the basement and main floor that were spreading to the attic. Two men in the home managed to get out on their own, but a woman had to be rescued by firefighters.

The woman was taken to hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries, Alberta Health Services said, while the two men in stable condition were taken to hospital to be checked over. All three people were between 20 and 40 years old.

The fire was brought under control shortly after 8 a.m., but as of 10:30 a.m. crews were still on scene putting out hot spots.

Fire investigators were called in to determine the cause of the fire and the extent of damage.
