Cool, wet spring should keep grasshoppers at bay

SASKATOON – Producers in Saskatchewan won’t likely have to fret about grasshoppers chewing through their crops this year, as long as it stays cool and wet again this spring. 

The province’s 2013 grasshopper forecast says wet and cool weather last spring and the spring before hasn’t been favourable for the development of grasshopper populations.

Still, Saskatchewan’s insect and vertebrate pests specialist says any hoppers that did survive last spring would have thrived in June’s hot temperatures and the dry conditions that followed through to September. 

The province says growers should still monitor their crops, particularly if they grow lentils, which are particularly susceptible to grasshoppers during flowering and pod development.
