Vancouver airport (YVR) is preparing for what will likely be the busiest travel day of the Christmas season.

The airport is expected to remain very busy for the next few days as travellers head home or to visit friends and family for Christmas.

Airport officials are warning everyone to allow for extra time and to arrive at the airport early.

It is estimated 83,000 people will pass through the Vancouver airport today between 5 a.m. and midnight.

A total of 1.6 million people will pass through the airport between Dec. 15 and Jan. 3.

YVR does have extra staff on shift to keep everything moving but with uncertainties like the weather forecast, planes will likely have to be de-iced, which can lead to delays.

The forecast for Thursday means temperatures will hover around zero for the most part with snow possible Thursday afternoon. It will be less than Tuesday’s snowfall but likely a few centimetres will fall late Thursday and into the evening.

If you are driving to the airport today, leave extra time to find parking and walk to the terminal. Another option is the Canada Line, which will get you to the airport in 26 minutes from downtown Vancouver.

“If you’re taking the Canada Line to the airport, keep your eyes open for check-in kiosks located at the busier stations, such as Broadway or in the downtown area,” said Reg Krake, YVR director of customer care.

“With so many people travelling this time of year you really do want time on your side so our number one recommendation is leaving extra time to make for an enjoyable and stress-free journey.”

Another tip to save time? Don’t wrap Christmas presents before putting them in your carry-on. They may have to be unwrapped by a security officer.

Travellers are advised to check the YVR website for any possible delays or schedule changes before heading to the airport.
