Martin Short not aflutter about Twitter

TORONTO – If you’re curious about what Martin Short had for lunch or wondering what movie he just watched, don’t go looking on Twitter.

The beloved Canadian comedian and actor said Wednesday he has no use for social media.

“I don’t have to tell people, ‘Oh my God, I just had the best tuna sandwich.’ I don’t want people to know more about me,” he said. “They know plenty about me.”
Appearing on Global’s The Morning Show, Short said he has no intention of jumping on the bandwagon of celebrities who over-share.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“You don’t have to do it. You don’t have to tweet. You don’t have to do anything. It doesn’t matter,” he insisted. “At this point in my life I don’t need more people to come up to me and say ‘I know you hate this but would you take a picture with me?'”

The 62-year-old native of Hamilton, Ont. said he sees tweeting as too much pressure. “Steve Martin tweets because he is a comedy writer and he tweets jokes. He’s not tweeting to become more famous,” said Short.

The funnyman, who will host the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards — an amalgamation of the former Gemini and Genie Awards — next month, said his success is largely due to his Canadian roots.

“This is an unbelievably nurturing country for eccentric behaviour,” Short explained. “I don’t think it’s just coincidental that Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Jim Carrey or Dan Aykroyd are Canadian. I think SCTV could not have had its true creative flourish had it not been in Canada.”
