City to close McCall golf course – revise fee schedule for other courses

CALGARY – The city has announced McCall golf course in the northeast will close once the 2014 golf season ends.

The city says it’s become too expensive to operate and plans to redevelop the site to potentially include an industrial and a recreational area, along with green space, as part of the McCall Lake concept plan.

“The McCall Lake repurposing vision is to create a place with a unique and compelling identity,” says Mayor Nenshi. “To create an inviting space that will provide opportunities for both work and play in the northeast.”

The McCall golf course is one of six city-run courses and one of three 18-hole courses.

The city is also looking at revising golf course fees and recommendations will go before city council for approval at the end of the year.

“While a revised fee structure will help to move Golf Course Operations to becoming more financially viable, the divesture of McCall Lake Golf Course is critical to addressing capital investments required to revitalize aging infrastructure and ensuring sustainability for the entire municipal golf system,” says Ward 5 Councillor Ray Jones.
