PORT HASTINGS, N.S. – The Strait Regional School Board have taken the next step in the process of officially closing Reverend H.J. MacDonald School in Heatherton, N.S.
The board voted in favour of declaring the school as surplus to its needs at its regular monthly meeting Wednesday.

The board’s operations director Terry Doyle says the vote is the first step in handing over the school to the Municipality of the County of Antigonish.
Board members voted to close the school last March, but a group of parents and residents filed for a judicial review of the decision.
The board’s decision was upheld by a Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge last month.
The community of Heatherton is currently looking at different uses for the building.
