Officers and paramedics were called to an apartment in the Mason Road and Eglinton Avenue East area, west of Markham Road, at around 10:40 a.m. with reports of a shooting. Emergency crews found a man, later identified as Malique Ellis, with multiple gunshot wounds and put the building in lockdown. He died at the scene.

“It was loud. I never heard gunshots like that before,” building resident Jennifer O’Toole told reporters.

Shortly after O’Toole said she heard the loud noise, she left her apartment and soon found the victim.

“I came down the stairs to get coffee and bread and I saw the body on the third floor. He was clearly dead,” O’Toole said.

The Toronto police homicide squad was called in to take over the investigation. Det. Hank Idsinga Hank Idsinga said during a news conference Sunday afternoon officers are looking for a male suspect wearing dark clothing.

“He was in the building for about eight minutes between the time he actually gained access to the front door and running out the back door,” Idsinga said, adding the suspect fired “at least a dozen shots” at the victim.

“As you can imagine in a residential hallway of an apartment building. I’m glad no one else was struck.”
