The City of Winnipeg officially opened a new downtown dog park Thursday.

The park is a fully-fenced 0.12 hectare area within Bonnycastle Park on Assiniboine Avenue. Park designers made use of existing trees and park elements with additional plantings put in to define the new space.

City Councillor Mike Pagtakhan said the off-leash area is a step forward in making the downtown area a more liveable place for pet owners.

“The new park is a great amenity for Downtown residents and also contributes to a vibrant and energetic Downtown where all Winnipeggers can gather and visit,” Pagtakhan said.

The site at Bonnycastle Park was chosen out of seven sites originally considered. Public feedback and operational requirements were noted as key reasons this site was selected.  An open house for the park, unveiling the design plan was held February 24, 2016.

The park is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
