Impaired driving suspected after 1 dead in head-on crash in East Gwillimbury: OPP

Ontario Provincial Police say alcohol appeared to have been a factor after one person was killed in a head-on crash in East Gwillimbury north of Toronto.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said police received a call just before 6 a.m. Monday regarding a collision on Highway 48 at Davis Drive just north of Whitchurch-Stouffville in York Region.

Police said a passenger vehicle traveling northbound drifted into the southbound lane and collided with another passenger vehicle.

Schmidt said the driver of the southbound vehicle, a 28-year-old man from Beeton, Ont., was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the northbound vehicle was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the driver of the northbound car, a 20-year-old man from Newmarket, Ont., was arrested for impaired driving.

Schmidt said the weather did not appear to play a factor in the crash.

Highway 48 was closed between Davis Drive and Vivian Road for the investigation, but the road has since been reopened.
