City of Guelph, transit union reach tentative agreement

The City of Guelph announced Monday afternoon that it has reached a tentative agreement with the union that represents Guelph Transit employees.

The city and the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1189 began negotiations back in May and a city spokesperson said they were pleased to reach the agreement without any service disruptions.

“We want to thank the union for working with us to negotiate an affordable settlement that protects taxpayers’ interests and provides fair, equitable, and competitive compensation to employees,” said David Godwaldt, Guelph’s general manager of human resources, in a news release.

The agreement will be voted on by city council at a meeting on Nov. 13, and the union will hold a ratification vote on Nov. 19.

“During the negotiation process, we challenged ourselves to think outside the box to get a deal that was fair and that would show great commitment from both parties,” said Andy Cleary, president of ATU Local 1189.
