Tom Hanks helps couple get engaged at Texas Book Festival

Oscar-winning actor and author Tom Hanks used his appearance at the Texas Book Festival in Austin to help a couple get engaged.

He was at the festival on Saturday to speak to hundreds of people about his new book, Uncommon Type: Some Stories.

During a question-and-answer session, Hanks told the crowd he was bored of answering their questions and wanted to ask one of his own.

Hanks then took out a piece of paper and announced that there was a man in the crowd, Ryan McFarling, who had a question for a woman in the crowd, Nikki Young.

Hanks said the question was: “Nikki, will you marry me?”

The couple went on stage and McFarling got down on one knee and gave Young a ring.

Hanks hugged the newly engaged woman and offered his best wishes to the couple.

Young spoke with reporters after the surprise proposal.  “I don’t know how he did it and magic happened. Most epic proposal ever,” she said.
