Kelowna’s Schizophrenia Society set to close after grant money denied

The Kelowna branch of the B.C. Schizophrenia Society may be closing after nearly three decades in the community.

“We have no more funds left,” program facilitator April Butler said. “We are at bare bones. We have enough to pay for November but not enough to pay for our office co-ordinator who is our only paid employee here.”

Like all of its branches, the Kelowna office relies on grant money to keep it running, but that’s proving more and more challenging.

Last year, its main grant from the BC Gaming Commission was cut from $50,000 to $30,000, and this year, a number of its grant applications have been denied.

“We’ve been turned down by grants we normally receive. We went after some new ones just this week… [we were told] there are so many organizations going after funding that we have to choose somebody and unfortunately, yours wasn’t the one”

The Kelowna branch helps about 40 clients every month.

Volunteers will try and keep the Kelowna office running for at least the month of November, but after that, if no grant money comes through, the office will likely close its doors.
