Calgary traffic: downtown roads re-opened after closures due to falling glass

WATCH: Roads have reopened in downtown Calgary after falling glass forced them to close. But as Tony Tighe reports, not before the shutdown caused grief for people and businesses – Oct 30, 2017

Several roads in downtown Calgary were closed on Monday after glass fell from a high-rise tower the day before.

Emergency crews were called to the 200 block of 6 Avenue S.W. on Sunday at around 9:45 a.m.

When they arrived, crews found the glass had fallen from a broken window on the 23rd floor of a building under construction (Brookfield Place.)

Fire crews cordoned off the area to prevent traffic or pedestrians from entering.

According to the Calgary Fire Department (CFD), the interior of the glass panels were intact but a partially broken pane remained on the exterior of the building.

High winds prevented anyone from beginning to fix the broken glass.

The glass caused the temporary closure of 1 Street S.W. between 5 Avenue and 8 Avenue, as well as 6 Avenue S.W. between Centre Street and 2 Street West.
