A two-vehicle accident in Surrey closed Highway 10 for hours Tuesday morning, sending five people to hospital.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. in the 168th Street intersection, when two vehicles collided in the westbound lanes of Highway 10.

One vehicle rolled over onto its roof, while the other went up in flames. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

Five people were taken to hospital with minor injuries, but all have since been released.

An RCMP officer who was directing traffic at the scene was nearly injured after being sideswiped by a pickup truck.

Highway 10 was closed westbound for hours between 168th and 176th Streets as crews cleaned up the scene, but the road was reopened around noon.
