Winnipeg Police are asking that you take closer look in your wallet after fake money has surfaced in the city.

Police have had several reports of counterfeit cash being passed around Winnipeg.

The concern surrounds the $100 bill.

Investigators are reminding businesses and shoppers you don’t have to accept cash if you believe it may be fake.

If you come in contact with a suspected counterfeit bill, police suggest you:

• Inspect it closely and compare it to a known authentic bill if possible.

• If safe to do so, retain the bill and ask the customer for another form of payment. As a consumer, decline the note and request another form of change.

• Try to obtain identification from the suspect, and note a description of the suspect or vehicle plate information.

• Notify police immediately.

Anyone with information on suspected counterfeit notes is asked to call police at 204 986-6231 or Crime Stoppers at 204 786- TIPS (8477).
