Child contracts same E.coli strain as outbreak linked to KFC, Taco Bell: N.B. officials

FREDERICTON – New Brunswick health officials say a child contracted the same strain of E. coli that is likely linked to lettuce sold at KFC and Taco Bell restaurants late last month.

Dr. Eilish Cleary, the chief medical officer of health, says a child from the Fredericton area under the age of two became ill about a week ago but has fully recovered.

Cleary says lab results show the case involves E. coli 0157, the same strain that was found on shredded lettuce distributed by FreshPoint Inc.

She says officials are interviewing family members in an effort to discover how the child became ill, but the most probable cause is that shredded lettuce.

Last week, health officials said that lettuce was the likely source of an E. coli outbreak affecting more than two dozen people in Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
