A woman is lucky to be alive after losing control of her vehicle and crashing into a fence outside a Burnaby home early Sunday morning.

A metal pole impaled the vehicle during the crash, narrowly missing the driver and two children who were in the car with her.

It happened near 16th Avenue and Mary Avenue around 2 a.m. According to neighbours, the driver allegedly hit the gas instead of the brake, losing control of the SUV and crashing into a fence outside a home.

A parked vehicle was also struck in the course of the accident.
