A non-profit group purchased the theatre in May and is trying to raise $2 million to restore the 1935 facade while updating the building to meet modern accessibility standards.

The Westdale Theatre Group hopes to reopen the heritage building next Canada Day.

Councillor Johnson notes that theatre restoration was the most popular choice among ward residents who participated in an annual “participatory budget” vote.
