Editor’s note: this article has been updated to include new information that the hotel security guard was shot before the gunman opened fire, rather than after as police initially stated.
In the worst mass shooting in U.S. modern history, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire on a concert with 22,000 attendees. Fifty-nine people were killed and 527 more were injured.
Here’s a look at how it unfolded. (All times are in local, pacific time.)

Just after 10 p.m. – Shots ring out from a hotel room window, that has been smashed open.
At first, people think it’s part of the show. Aldean reportedly stopped playing for a short time. More gunshots ring out before people realize it’s an attack.
10:08 p.m. – First 911 call of the shooting.
Witness accounts describe a scene of panic.
Jackie Hoffing told the Guardian: “It was hysteria. There were people trampled. We jumped walls, climbed cars, ran for our lives. I’ve never run that hard or been that scared in my whole life.”
More than 100 people are transported to hospital.
