The Provincial Junior Women’s Hockey League begins on Friday and the Kingston Junior Ice Wolves can’t wait for the drop of the puck.
“We’re super excited,” said second-year forward Scout Southward.
Last season, the Ice Wolves made the playoffs for the first time in five years, finishing in eighth place in the twenty-team league, but lost in the opening round of the playoffs to the Kitchener-Waterloo Rangers.
Kingston’s head coach Troy Sweet was named coach of the year in the league.
The Ice Wolves open on Friday night at the Invista Centre against the Bluewater Hawks. Then on Sunday afternoon, they’ll finish off the weekend against the Barrie Sharks.
Southward says it’s extremely important to start a new season on a positive note as “It sets the tone for the entire season ahead.”
Rookie defenceman Nicole Escano is also excited about the season ahead.
“I was thrilled when coach Sweet asked me to play this year and I can’t wait to wear an Ice Wolves uniform,” she said.She too, stresses the importance of a good start. “A couple of wins this weekend will give us the winning mentality necessary to be a top team in the league.”
Game time on Friday is 7:30 p.m. Sunday’s matinee will start at 12.30.
