Spokane school shooting leaves 1 student dead, 3 others injured

One person is in custody after a shooting at a high school near Spokane, Wash., left one student dead and three people injured.

A police spokeswoman confirmed to Reuters that shots were fired at Freeman High School in Rockford, south of Spokane, around 10 a.m. PT Wednesday. First responders and police were on scene.

Brian Schaeffer of the Spokane Fire Department says the threat “has been eliminated” at the school.

Schaeffer also said that one student was killed. Witnesses told the Spokesman-Review that the victim was a sophomore boy.

The Spokesman-Review reported that three female students were injured and that a suspect was in custody.

Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children’s Hospital received three pediatric patients, spokeswoman Nicole Stewart said. They were in stable condition, and family members were with them, she said.

“The shooter is in the backseat of a patrol car right now,” Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich told the Review. He did not offer details on the suspected shooter’s identity.

Officials told reporters a staff member brought the shooter down with “very courageous action.”

Reports say the shooter was also a male sophomore, but he has not been named.

“He was weird,” Michael Harper, a friend of the shooter told the Review. “And he loved the show Breaking Bad. He never really seemed like that person who had issues. He was always nice and funny and weird.”

Harper also told the Associated Press that the suspect was obsessed with past school shootings and brought a duffel bag to school on Wednesday.

The sheriff told reporters that the student entered the school with two weapons. When he tried to fire the first weapon, it jammed, CBS news reports.

That’s when the victim confronted him, before he was shot in the head by the gunman. He then shot down the hallway, injuring the three others.

Schools in Spokane, Wash., were on lockdown amid reports of the shooting. The lockdown has since been lifted.

Cheryl Moser said her son, a freshman at Freeman High School, called her from a classroom after hearing shots fired.

“He called me and said, ‘Mom there are gunshots.’ He sounded so scared. I’ve never heard him like that,” Moser told the newspaper. “You never think about something happening like this at a small school.”

One Twitter user, named Christina, a junior at the school, said she was evacuated to the nearby elementary school.
