Darrin Lamoureux, the leader of the Saskatchewan Liberals, is stepping down.
The announcement was made on Saturday to members at the Saskatchewan Liberal Party convention in Saskatoon.

Officials said the party will appoint an interim leader soon.
“While I remain supportive and positive about the long-term prospects of the Liberal brand in Saskatchewan, I feel that now is the appropriate time to step down to allow the renewal process that is underway to continue,” Lamoureux said in a press release.
“I believe that by stepping down and having an open leadership contest, Liberal supporters will have the opportunity to be involved in a meaningful debate to define the party ahead of the 2020 election.”

Lamoureux was acclaimed leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party in August 2014.
He last ran against four other candidates in the Saskatoon Meewasin byelection. Ryan Meili won the seat for the Saskatchewan NDP on March 2.
The Saskatchewan Liberals said they will begin preparations for a leadership convention to be held in 2018.
