St. Paul RCMP originally said they were called to a home early Wednesday evening, where a man was said to be causing a disturbance.

ASIRT said Friday police were called to the Whitefish Lake First Nation at about 6:15 p.m. for reports a man was swinging a weapon.

The first officer found the armed suspect at the side of the road just before 7:45 p.m. and tried to speak to him, ASIRT said.

“A confrontation occurred between the man and the lone officer that ended with the officer discharging his police service weapon, striking the man,” reads the statement released Friday.

ASIRT said the man succumbed to critical injuries during an ambulance ride to hospital, despite receiving emergency care from officers and EMS on scene.

ASIRT said its investigation is in the early stages and as such, no further information will be released.
