A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly lighting nearly two-dozen vehicles on fire.
Between August 13 and September 3, Winnipeg police looked into 21 vehicle fires.
Constable Jay Murray said all happened in the St. James-Assiniboia and Assiniboine South neighbourhoods.
“We don’t often see arsons in those numbers in the city, especially ones that are all related in one area or committed by one suspect,” Murray said. “In each case, this individual put some kind of flammable material up against the vehicle and tried to light it on fire.”
In each case, the fire was set overnight. Over $100,000 in damage was done.
“In some cases, it just caused a minor amount of damage, but in some of them, it engulfed the vehicle in flames and created write-offs,” Murray said. “A lot of people have been inconvenienced by this. I know that residents were concerned and alarmed, but we’re confident we have the right person.”
Shawn Robert Hall was arrested and faces nearly two dozen counts of arson.
