Charge up at Okanagan College

If you build it, they will come. That is what an Okanagan institution hopes as it installs electric car charging stations on campus.

Okanagan College wants more people to go green, which is why the school has installed four electric car charging stations at its Kelowna campus, two in Penticton, two in Salmon Arm and two in Vernon.

Rob St. Onge, energy specialist with Okanagan College, says he hopes the stations will encourage more people to consider electric cars rather than gas guzzling vehicles.

“We all need to be a little more conscious of our transportation choices in general. Electric cars are just one way to get us out of the one person per vehicle mentality, especially a fuel powered vehicle,” St. Onge said. “Electric cars are better than driving here in a gas powered vehicle but better yet is to carpool, walk, ride your bike or take the bus.”

He notes that the level two charging stations will take four hours to fully charge a car. A level three charging station can charge a vehicle in 15 to 20 minutes.

St. Onge says motorists will only be charged to park in the parking spot, not for the electricity.

The stations were partially subsidized by the provincial government and are just some of the more than 450 stations that the province is installing around B.C.
