Residents of de la Savane Street in Côte-des-Neiges say they’ve been living with major headaches for almost a month.

“For pedestrians, it was kind of hell,” said Nancy Hurrell, who walks to her job.

Ashkan Houshmand lives in a condominium without a garage and relies on street parking.

“People need parking.”

The City of Montreal has started a $50-million project to revamp the neighbourhood into more of a green space.

Plans call for bike lanes and improved parks, which also means a reduction in parking.

“It’s a hedge against urban sprawl,” said Marvin Rotrand, Snowdon city councillor.

The first phase of the revamp, which will primarily affect de la Savane Street, is slated to go until the end of the year.

Much of the second phase, to build parks and other green initiatives, will occur next year.
