Cordell Brown arrest ‘unrelated’ to fatal arson: Edmonton police

The father of a baby boy who died in an Edmonton house fire was arrested and taken to hospital on Friday night over a matter “unrelated” to the deadly blaze, police said Saturday.

On Friday night, the father – Cordell Brown – told Global News he was arrested for arson in connection with Tuesday’s fatal fire that killed his son, Hunter Brown.

Police are investigating the fire as both an arson and a homicide.

Global News has reached out to Brown to ask why his explanation for his arrest differs from what police said.

Brown told Global News he was arrested in southwest Edmonton Friday night and released a few hours later.

Brown said he contacted Global News after being released by police on a promise to appear in court next Thursday.

Police say Brown’s son, Hunter, died from smoke inhalation in a deliberately set house fire in Ambleside on Tuesday morning.

Brown’s wife, Angie Tang, remains in hospital with serious injuries as a result of smoke inhalation.

Five other people lived in the home that caught fire and were able to make it out before fire crews arrived.
