Severe thunderstorm warning lifted for Lac Ste. Anne County

A number of areas west of Edmonton were put under a severe thunderstorm warning Wednesday night.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this evening, that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” Environment Canada said on its website shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Parts of Yellowhead County and the M.D. of Big Lakes were under a warning as of 5:45 p.m. while a number of other areas were under a severe thunderstorm watch.

By 6:07 p.m., all warnings had been dropped although several watches remained in place.

However, at 7:48 p.m., Environment Canada issued a new severe thunderstorm warning for part of Yellowhead County. The said the storm was located 70 kilometres west of Lodgepole and was moving east at 25 kilometres per hour.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., the warning for Yellowhead County was dropped although a severe thunderstorm watch remained.

At about 10:10 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Lac Ste. Anne County, west of Edmonton. The warning was lifted at 10:33 p.m.

“This thunderstorm is located 15 kilometres southwest of Glenevis and is moving to the northeast at 40 km/h,” Environment Canada said.

The weather agency said people should take cover if threatening weather approaches in those areas and warned severe storms can result in flash floods, water pooling on roads, dangerously large hail and produce tornadoes.
