Peel police officer charged with domestic assault, forcible confinement

A rookie Peel Regional Police constable has been suspended after being charged with domestic assault.

Sgt. Josh Colley, media relations officer for Peel police, said the officer was arrested Sunday after an alleged victim came forward the day before.

He also faces charges of forcible confinement and mischief over $5,000.

Colley said the police force isn’t commenting on the specifics of the allegations.

In a statement, police chief Jennifer Evans said the force does not tolerate “conduct of this nature” and said any officer who “engages in this behaviour will be investigated and charged appropriately.”

Const. Rajvir Ghuman had been on the job just under a year, as one of 35 new officers sworn in in September.

He has been suspended with pay, as is procedure under the Police Services Act.

Ghuman was set to appear in court in Brampton on Monday.
